On May 2nd 2013, Ms. Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed her deep concern about the use of excessive force by the police forces of the Government of Indonesia on
30 April 2013 in Sorong, Papua, during preparations for a peaceful
demonstration to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the administrative
transfer of Papua to Indonesia. As a result, two indigenous Papuans, Mr.
Abner Malagawak and Mr. Thomas Blesya were killed. A third person,
Salomina Klaibin died in hospital a few days later. Two others were
wounded. Similar incidents took place in Biak and Timika, where at least
27 protesters were arrested.
This parallel event aims at critically reviewing the human rights situation in Papua, especially after the adoption of the second UPR recommendation of Indonesia, the plan of the visit of SR on Freedom of _expression_ and the first review of Indonesia under the Human Rights Committee, scheduled to take place in July 2013.
The
focus will be given on the freedom of _expression_ in Papua and Papuan
political prisoners. On the occasion of this event, Franciscans
International (FI), International Coalition for Papua (ICP), will
present the report Human Rights in Papua 2013, which portrays the violation of civil and political rights, as well as economic, social and cultural rights. The TAPOL report, No Political Prisoners? The suppression of political protest in West Papua, will also be available during the meeting..
